Our hosting provider is under a large DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack since about 1pm Eastern Time (that's GMT - 5). Currently the site's back up and will hopefully remain so. Due to the nature of these types of attacks though it very well may be up and down for a while until the attackers get bored and move on to another attack.
We apologize for the downtime, this is a situation where there's nothing we can do though.
Seems sorta sad that people are bored enough to hack sites. =(
This isn't even hacking, they're using vast botnets of infected/trojaned computers (whether created by worms, viruses or whatever the end result's the same) that they command to attack their target by bombarding it with traffic. Since the traffic's coming from thousands and thousands of individual machines it's hard to block. What they did was get their uplink provider to put a null route in their routers for the IP that was being attacked.
Then another attack started hitting a different IP, taking them down again.
Keep in mind this wasn't just us but all the hundreds (or even thousands) of sites my hosting provider hosts in addition to us. And all this was probably because someone took offense at something said on some website so they attacked it. So it's even sadder than them hacking a site, at least that takes some work.
