posted on ANN:

Neogentronyx has placed an 18-foot-tall, anime-inspired mecha prototype up for auction on Ebay. The mecha, which includes a flame thrower, has a starting bid of $35,000 and an unknown limit. Although the mecha is designed to walk, the builder states that it is a prototype and not capable of safely taking "large strides." Source: Endgadget

I'm not much of a mecha fan but I want one of those. At a $35,000 starting bid, I can't believe that it already has bidders. Heck, if I can only go to Alaska and take a close look at this mech.

I was going to place this at the "Great Deals" section when I realized that this is a bargain only if you're a millionare. >_<

They should use these to maintain schoolyard discipline.

..piloted by angst-filled teenagers?

Suddenly schools won't have such a hassle getting students to volunteer for day duty...

It's kinda sad when the first thing I thought when I read the article was one of the SnA crew piloting this thing.

Weird, the high bidder's a teenager (I thought someone had posted that before but now I'm not seeing the post). Their about me page says they're selling stuff off to make some money before going to college so you really have to wonder about how serious they are on bidding on this sucker.

Whatever the case may be they account for most of the bids, having continiously outbid anyone else.

Perhaps they're planning on using this to insure they get all A's. Wink

I really wonder if it's not intentional, that is the seller's got some kid to push up the bidding (but keep it under the reserve so the kid won't actually be forced to pay up). I'll bet eBay will be looking closely at it too, after all it's really odd. If it was just a lark they'd have bid maybe once or twice, but 10+ times? Shocked

Oh well, if he is legit and wins it I just hope he isn't deciding to go to college anywhere near me! Very Happy

Actually, if he joined our college's anime club, that'd be pretty cool...

(we'd never have budget problems again)

Or have to go to class! It's easy to get straight A's when you can tear a professor's house down in minutes. Wink

Oh, and forget about parking problems on campus! Just pick up a car and toss it away, instant parking space. Very Happy

Why would you move a car if you had a mecha? Just "step into" the parking space...

Flame thrower = no more undercooked cafeteria food. Rolling Eyes

Because it's more fun to create piles of cars you've tossed aside. Just think of the looks on their owners faces when they come back from class to find a 50+ care pileup. Wink

Still just about as edible though, charcoal's not easy to eat after all. Wink

Actually the school I went to had good food before they contracted out the food services to Aramark. I commuted and still got a meal plan because 1. I was on campus all day anyway (I lived an hour away) and 2. the food was good. That ended with Aramark taking over. Man was the food awful... Shocked

I guess that's what happens when you contract food service out to the lowest bidder ehh?

The auction ended without a winner, the reserve was not met. But the company had it relisted again. The starting bid is now $40K + 8K for shipping without reserve. Maybe Owens should make the mech a bit more shiny to make it more appealing. Wink

Anyhow, I want to be friends with whomever wins this item. It'll be a good way to intimidate people. I wonder how this will perform against a humvee. >____<

Hmm, the shipping was listed at only $5k before, that's a rather hefty bump in shipping price! I wonder how much the listing fee was for that sucker. Very Happy

And it's probably still "some assembly required" once it arrives. Wink
