I figured I'd make a thread about funny Asian merchadise/customs/
movies/quirks/etc.

To start off...

http://www.winterson.com.nyud.net:8090/2005/06/episode-iii-backstroke-of-west.html

Read at your own risk. Do not eat or drink while reading.

If you hate Star Wars, do not click on that link. If you like Star Wars... don't click on that link either. If you ever want to see Star Wars in a similar light ever again, do not click on that link.

One of the worst/funniest "Engrish" things I saw when I was in Japan was a t-shirt. It said on it, in English: "Treat me like a lady - Tie me up and let's play the bondage game!"

I was with my a friend of mine who was living there at the time (he's American though) and also a female friend of his. She was also American. She bought one of those shirts! I have no clue where she was planning to wear it or what she was going to do with it. Smile

After reading that one and some more we decided that sometimes they must just go online and find some random english that looks good and use it without finding out what it really says. Smile That would explain a lot! There are an awful lot of people in the US that'll get tatoos even of various Chinese characters/kanji and not know for sure what they mean so apparently it's a universal thing, it's just the asians do more of it. Wink

It's funnier when we don't tell the Caucasians they're being silly.

The mere mention of the title "Backstroke of the West" just cracks me up.

I once saw a t-shirt in Japan that had a big ol' picture of a grinning Mexican guy on it with this giant sombrero, holding a beer. Under the picture it read, "Super Homos!"

I tried to con my friend into buying it (I was broke) but he wouldn't Laughing

Oh wow, that star wars link was the funniest thing I've seen in a long time. I have tears in my eyes from laughing so much. I am so tempted to link that from my blog...

That is why I don't buy pirated DVDs, despite their dirt cheapness. Besides, all their video sources usually come from the internet too.

Anyway, anyone remember Takeshi's Castle? link

The best laughs come from the game where the contestants try to cross a rope bridge holding a golden ball, and the enemies shoot cannon-volleyballs at them! So funny! I feel nostalgic, I wanna watch that show again.

If you live in the US and are (un)fortunate enough to get SpikeTV you can see a very badly dubbed version of it. They call it MXC and the English dialogue they dub over is incredibly juvenile.

It's kinda sad to say the original version of Takeshi's Castle was more "mature" than the dub isn't it?

I saw one episode of that MXC, it's horrible. It's like trying to make a fully Japanese show American. What's with Vic Romano?

Our native Filipino dub is kinda better (maybe I'm biased but MXC is just bad). They replaced the talk scenes with Beat Takeshi on it with two of our own comedy actors dressed in Japanese outfits, acting like Takeshi and his minion. They provided the blow-by-blow talk too.

I think there exists another English version of the show (UK perhaps?), that's a little better.

Heh, Takeshi's Castle. I remember the part where the guys have to swing around on this thing and try to land on some islands or they fall into the water.

MXC... is better left not discussed.

Dunno, I might want a pirated version of Star Wars... just for laughs.

There's a chain of stores in Japan called Hard Off. They're actually pretty cool, selling used electronics and stuff, but the name always made me laugh. Smile

There's also the infamous Calpis drink which doesn't look so bad, but once you pronounce it you might not feel like drinking it. Wink
