|
|
When I started Random Curiosity, I wasn't sure what type of readership I'd get and what I'd need in terms of hosting and stuff. So I used Blogger, which I'd been using for a while for other stuff, cause I knew my way around.
Recently, I've been a bit dissatisfied with the stuff you can do with Blogger (Categories being one of the main issues). Thus, I've been thinking of moving off of it and getting my own domain and hosting, etc.
So the questions I have are:
1. Are there any good hosting places that I could put my site and run, say, WordPress? I'm currently hosting my images in a lot of various places and ideally would like to put it all on one place. And while I don't get nearly as many hits as some other bloggers, I still go through quite a bit of bandwidth. Also, money is an issue as I can't afford mega-hosting just for my little blog.
2. Should I even think about moving? There's stuff I have to consider like having to redirect people and potentially lost readership. I also don't know much of anything about PHP or MySQL, so I don't know how much work it would be to set up WordPress. _________________ Random Curiousity |

I think blogsome uses Wordpress if I'm not mistaken. I'm going to assume it does most of the work for you, so setting up shouldn't be hard. Plus if you have any problems, there's plenty of us on the forums that know how to do it and are more than willing to help.
As for images, I can set you up space over on my server. Since I basically took the "free" galleries down, the rest of my alloted 2.4GIG space will eventually be eaten up by screencaping. So I don't mind sharing since I doubt between the two of us we'll kill the space anytime soon. Bandwidth I have no issue with since at worst, only 60GIG out of my 120GIG gets killed and that's usually because I temp host matthew's fansubbing PM me if you're interested Omni. _________________ moyism.com | natsuki.us | haruhiism.com |

Don't forget we offer free hosting too Omni, although we're still finalizing a few things. E-mail or message me if you're interested, while we're not officially fully open, I can make exceptions (and I think being both an established blogger and one of my core moderators qualifies for one. )
Oh yeah, we use Word Press by default. |

Maestro seems to have a pretty good offer (you know... free...), and you get a lot more control over your plugins than with some of the free sites that have Wordpress pre-installed.
I have moved two sites from Blogger to Wordpress and it's not too bad. There are instructions on the Wordpress Codex, but I believe you'll have to go back and reassign all the categories to the old posts you've made. You shouldn't need to know much PHP or MySQL, and the recent additions of themes should make it fairly painless to give your site a unique look.
The one thing you will need to worry about in the move is spam. Make sure you get yourself at least one good spam filter (we use Spam Karma 2.0, and I have heard good things about WP Hashcash and Bad Behavior), or you'll be kicking yourself later on.
If you have the database and everything prepared, setting up Wordpress should not take more than 10 minutes, and less than a day to make everything look how you want. Of course, make sure to back everything up beforehand . _________________ 1/3 of Sea Slugs! Anime Blog |

I also install additional themes with the base install because frankly the default theme is horrid for figuring out how to modify things. Once I switched my own blog to another theme I quickly got the hang of CSS and modified it to suit my needs.

At a minimum there's a list of common spam words you can put in that'll cause the comment to be held for approval. If you get a lot of comments though you're going to want something more potent, like the plugin Kabitzin mentioned.
Also don't think you won't get hit because you're not as big as some other sites. I got hit with comment spam about a month after I started my blog and I had about 4 total entries at the time. Spammers are real asses. |

While a lot slicker than the original WP theme, the "Kubrick" theme that defaults with new WP installs is actually horrible for personalization. About 90% is impossible to understand, unless you have a deep deep understanding of how WP works. Also, trying to customize it is exceedingly difficult, because everything is made to fit perfectly together. Fortunately, there are tons of great themes out there to download (check out Alex King's WP themes contest). _________________ 1/3 of Sea Slugs! Anime Blog |

Well I'm glad to hear it's not just me that found it to be such a pain! |

Tell me about it, I'm still stuck at that theme even now!
I'd better pick a new one... _________________ bluemist anime blog

Well the hosting suggestions you guys have put forward certainly outclass my own. I'm currently paying $2.50 a month + $15 a year (AUD), for 100 mb space, and 10 gb bandwidth. I figured that, if the blog actually became popular enough to warrant any more, I could just upgrade to 1.5 gb space and 25 gb bandwidth a month, for $2.50 more a month.
Is there a better alternative, then? I tried to find out what animeblogger actually IS, but failed. _________________ http://www.wakaranai.org -- currently searching for readers! |

That's because we're not fully operational yet. I had the idea to do this site back in February and got Matthew involved at that point and we've been building from there. Asakomi started helping us with the legal stuff back in June (or was it late May? I forget, sorry if I'm wrong. )
Actually we're going to have more to offer than I originally envisioned, but it's all good. In addition to the forums we will be hosting anime & manga blogs for free. Matthew came up with the idea for an anime database (similar to the Japanese Hatena's Diary one). He made a post recently about what all he's been doing that you can find here: http://matthew.animeblogger.net/archives/2005/06/24/tgif.php We're also getting the signup process together as we're going to have to keep a seperate user database from my hosting provider. This is actually probably a good thing since I'm sure we'll eventually reach the point we need to move to colo servers and having the user database seperate should ease that transition a lot.
Basically the goal is to be a portal (although I hate that word) for the anime & manga blogging community, providing tools, hosting, forums, etc. |

wow! That sounds awesome. I wish you guys the best of luck! Hopefully I can get involved when it's ready! (I'd help but I'd be of know use. I tutorial my way through everything).
You obviously can't host any tom, dick, and harry, so what kind of selection process do you have in mind? (Just out of interest now) _________________ http://www.wakaranai.org -- currently searching for readers! |

We don't have any plans to limit it actually, although there are rules that apply (for instance no porn). Certainly we hope for the site to eventually pay for itself (through donations and affiliate links mainly). If it can't we might have to stop taking new people at some point, but we'll see how things work out. As it is now I can afford the monthly hosting fee OK, and it comes with a large amount of bandwidth so it should be a while before we need to upgrade. |
